The Selection (Selection #1) by Kiera Cass

The Selection (Selection #1) - by Kiera Cass

What wins out in the end? The future or the past?

*NB: my tag line, not hers!

Blurb:

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself--and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined

My Review:

My conversation after reading this:

Me: OHMYGOD IM IN LOVE <3 <3

Friend: ooh what's his name?
Me: Maxon
Friend: interesting name. Is he cute?
Me: DEFINITLEY. but there's this girl he likes, and I like them together. But she has an ex who broke her heart, and she still loves him. I swear, if she ends up with her ex I will KILL her!!! But Maxon, ohmygod in love!
Friend: ...

So, for those of you contemplating this read I would recommend it. It's a great read that will keep you on the tip of your toes. It's another dystopian style novel, but the idea was unoriginal and yet original at the same time. (And yes, that is a paradox) Kiera uses a unique blend of heartache, friendship, family devotion, judgement, and more to create a masterpiece that I haven't seen the likes of before.

As a VERY general statement, this is my favourite dystopian novel so far, and that's saying something! All dystopian novels seem the same to me: ranks, separated classes, rebellion of some sort and a relapse in terms of technology and the sophistication of society. SOMETHING about this book grabbed me, and whatever it is I applaud Kiera on it.

Alright, my 'synopsis'

America Singer is right where she wants to be. Sure, her family annoys her sometimes, and she's not exactly the top of the food chain, but she's content. Oh, and she has the guy to go with it all.
So when The Selection comes around (a once in a lifetime competition) why would she enter?
Either way America Singer ends up as part of the Selection, living under Prince Maxon. But what will her heartache make her do? And is there really anyone behind the shallow, vain facade that Maxon shows the world?

Playlist:Fifteen by Taylor Swift - hearing about Aspen and America

Give your heart a break - Maxon when he first kisses America

I give this 5/5 stars. It's a GREAT read, and a new spin on an oldish idea! Brava!!
